Art Critiquing in the Classroom!

Teaching high school students how to properly write a formal critique in art is something I have always struggled with.  Now that I am in 3rd year of teaching art, I feel that I FINALLY figured out what works and what doesn't. This bundle will provide you with a page of notes, various critique worksheets, and even a quiz. By the time this bundle is completed, students will be able to identify, write, and define the 4 stages of the critique process. If this is something that you struggle with or would like to get better at check out my latest product on Teachers Pay Teachers (Art: 4 Stage Critique Bundle)!

Here's how I use them in the classroom...

Use the cards themselves in various ways.

Annie Sloan...meet the bathroom!

Room Recipes for Style and ColourA few months ago, my husband and I bought a place in the Columbus area.  When we purchased it, it was totally still in the 1980s and honestly it still is.  My first task over Christmas break was really to paint the whole house, but after painting half the house (including two ceilings...that's a story in itself), I was exhausted and tired of looking at paint for a while.  Anyways, I'm not sure if you are familiar with Annie Sloan paint or know anything about her products.  Well, this past Christmas I thought I should give her products a try. There is a store near my parents house, Pottsies which I absolutely love! They have amazing little goodies and all the furniture they paint with Sloan's paint looks amazing!  So I bought a can of the white (Pure) and a grayish color (French Linen) along with the wax and a few brushes.  After using her products, I am still not sure about them.  I found it very difficult to paint with and it took a lot of time! Also,  I found her products to be very expensive. I don't if I didn't paint right or what...but I would like to give her products another chance before this paint and I are no longer friends. On on good note, I will say that the paint was very easy to clean up and if I made a mistake, it came right off with water!

Anyways, I decided to paint my half bath vanity with her products.  I thought at first I would do the base gray and the cabinets white, but I honestly didn't like the look of it and just painted the whole thing white.

So the first step was to remove hardware from vanity and wash all the doors down (I just used soap and water). Then, I just started painting! After about 4 coats, yes it seemed like forever, it was looking pretty good! A little antique but yet very clean!  Once everything dried, I reattached the doors to the cabinet and waxed the entire vanity.

About 48 hours later, my husband buffed the cabinet to make it super shiny. Then, I was able to attach the adorable new hardware my husband and I picked out from Anthropologie! On a side note...if you have never been to Anthropologie...you need to go!

Here are some picture of the bathroom before and and after.
The color that I chose I ended up going with was Benjamin Moore's Antique Jade (on right).

Here is the vanity before....

A Life of a Student

After posting my last post, even though it wasn't much, I found something that may be able to turn our teacher jobs into more of what things would be like the first day of school.  The Washington Post has a really interesting article...

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/answer-sheet/wp/2014/10/24/teacher-spends-two-days-as-a-student-and-is-shocked-at-what-she-learned/

This article has really made me think about my classroom and my teaching style.  Yes, my ideal room would be having my students sit down and not say a word so I can talk the entire time....

However, that may always be the best solution.  I want to encourage all teachers whether you teach middle school or high school to read this! It may put a different perspective on teaching! :)

Despicable Me

http://giantgag.net/teachers-be-like-minions/

Despicable Me is probably one of my favorite movies of all time. I mean come on...who doesn't love the minions!? :) As teachers, we all have had the despicable moments of our career or even of our week.  We love seeing our students everyday and love seeing their smiles each morning (well after a skinny vanilla latte from Starbucks) but mostly seeing them grow throughout the year.   Anyways, now that it is the end of October, I think/know we all feel a little burnt out and a bit despicable.  So, I want to let you, teachers, know that you are not alone in your job! Everyday counts and does makes a difference in your students life...even the days that can feel a bit despicable!
